Dead battery, no-start, won't hold a charge
Car Battery Replacement and Jump Start in Sarasota
The car was fine yesterday. This morning it clicks, or the dash lights flicker, or nothing happens at all. Mr. Sarasota Mobile Mechanic comes to the car, tests the battery and the charging system, and replaces the battery on the spot if that's what it needs.

Why Batteries Fail Early in Sarasota
Heat is harder on a car battery than cold. Cold makes a weak battery show its weakness. Heat is what makes it weak in the first place. Underhood temperatures here sit well above 140 degrees in summer traffic, and that speeds up grid corrosion and water loss inside the battery. The average battery life in Florida is around two to three years. The five-year battery your cousin in Michigan talks about doesn't exist here.
The failure usually shows up on a hot afternoon, because a hot engine needs more cranking current and a hot battery has less to give. Publix lots, the Walmart on Fruitville, the beach parking at Siesta Key, and the airport garage are where a lot of these calls come from.
Salt air adds a second problem. Cars near the water build up corrosion on the terminals and cable ends. A battery can test fine on the bench and still not start the car because the connection is bad. Cleaning and protecting the terminals is part of every battery visit.
Tested Before Replaced
A battery that's replaced without testing the alternator is a battery that might die again in a month. Every no-start visit includes:
- Battery load test. A conductance tester measures cold cranking amps against the rating on the label. A battery at 40 percent of its rating in August is done.
- Charging system test. Alternator output at idle and at 2,000 rpm, with and without electrical load. Low output or excessive AC ripple means the alternator, not the battery, is the problem.
- Voltage drop test on the cables. A corroded cable can drop two volts under cranking load. That's the difference between starting and clicking.
- Parasitic draw check when the history calls for it. If the battery is new and keeps dying after the car sits a few days, something is staying on. A module, a trunk light, an aftermarket stereo amp. That gets found with a meter on the fuse box, not by guessing.
If the battery is the problem, the replacement is the correct group size and terminal orientation for the vehicle, including AGM batteries for cars that came with them. Vehicles with battery management systems get the new battery registered so the charging system knows it's new.

Jump Start Only
Sometimes you just need the car started so you can get home or to work. A jump start visit does that, with a quick battery test included so you know whether it's going to happen again tomorrow. Dome light left on overnight: the battery is probably fine. Car that sat for three weeks and the battery is four years old: it's probably not.
Battery Service Across Sarasota and Manatee
No-start calls are moved to the front of the day because a car that doesn't run is a car that's blocking something: a driveway, a garage, a parking spot at work. Coverage runs from Longboat Key and Palmetto in the north to Venice and North Port in the south, with Lakewood Ranch and Bradenton in between.
Battery Questions
The car clicks once but won't crank. Battery or starter?
A rapid clicking is almost always the battery. A single loud click with a good battery is usually the starter solenoid. The test on site settles it in a few minutes. See the starter and alternator page.
Do you take the old battery?
Yes. The old battery is recycled, which is required in Florida and also the reason the core charge exists.
Can you replace a battery in a parking garage?
Yes. Most battery replacements don't need the car jacked up, so a garage spot is fine. Some vehicles have the battery under the rear seat or in the trunk; those take a little longer and are still done on site.
