Pre-Purchase Car Inspection in Sarasota
A used car inspection at the seller's driveway, the dealer lot, or a parking lot halfway between. Mr. Sarasota Mobile Mechanic looks at the car the way a mechanic looks at a car, writes down what's found, and tells you what it means for the price.

Flood Cars Are a Sarasota Problem
Hurricane Ian in 2022 put storm surge through Fort Myers and Port Charlotte. Helene in 2024 flooded coastal streets from Siesta Key to Anna Maria. Milton followed two weeks later. Tens of thousands of cars took on water on the Gulf Coast in those three storms, and a large number of them are still being sold.
A flood car with a clean-looking title is not rare. Cars get totaled, bought at auction, cleaned, titled in a state with loose rules, and driven back to Florida to sell. Private sellers sometimes dry a car out themselves and list it without mentioning the water.
Saltwater does not announce itself. The car starts and drives. Then, over months, modules fail, connectors corrode, airbag lights come on, and the wiring harness turns into a slow leak of money. The inspection checks the places water leaves evidence: silt under the carpet padding, rust on seat mounting bolts and seat belt anchors, corrosion inside the fuse box and on the harness connectors under the dash, a water line in the trunk, a musty smell the air freshener is hiding, and mismatched or new carpet in an older car.
What the Inspection Covers
- Body and frame. Paint thickness readings, panel gaps, overspray, signs of prior collision repair, rust in the rockers and subframe mounts.
- Flood evidence. As described above, plus the headlight housings and under the spare tire.
- Engine and drivetrain. Cold start, idle quality, noises, leaks at the valve cover, timing cover, oil pan, and axle seals. Oil and transmission fluid condition. Coolant condition and signs of oil in it.
- Scan tool. Stored codes, pending codes, permanent codes, and readiness monitor status. Monitors that are all "not ready" mean someone cleared the codes recently, which is worth asking about.
- Brakes and tires. Pad and rotor measurements, tire tread depth and date codes. Snowbird cars in Sarasota often have tires that look new and are eight years old.
- Suspension and steering. Ball joints, tie rods, bushings, struts, and the clunks you hear on a road test over the brick streets downtown.
- Electrical and accessories. Every window, lock, light, the AC, the heater, and the dash warning lights at key-on.
- Road test. Shifting, braking straight, noises under load, steering return, highway stability.
You get the findings as a plain list: what's fine, what needs attention soon, what's expensive, and what's a reason to walk away. Nothing is dressed up or buried.

Where Inspections Happen
Private sales in Sarasota, Bradenton, Lakewood Ranch, Venice, Palmetto, and North Port. Dealer lots along US-41, Bee Ridge, and Cortez Road. Carvana and Vroom deliveries within the seven-day window. Estate and snowbird sales where the car has been sitting in a garage. Most sellers agree to an inspection; one who refuses has told you something.
Also Useful For
End of a lease, to know what the dealer will charge for. Before a long drive north for the summer. After a hurricane, to check your own car for water intrusion before small problems become big ones. Before buying out a rental you've been driving.
Inspection Questions
How long does a pre-purchase inspection take?
About an hour to ninety minutes at the car, including the road test. Findings are explained on the spot, in plain words.
Can the seller be there?
Yes, and they usually are. The inspection is factual, not a negotiation. You take the findings and handle the price from there.
Will you check a car in Bradenton or Venice?
Yes. Inspections run anywhere in Sarasota and Manatee counties, and into Charlotte County for North Port and Port Charlotte by arrangement.
